Clare Helen Welsh

Clare is a neurodivergent children's writer and former primary school teacher, living in Devon with her husband, two children and a dog called Hope. She is delighted that her books mean she can inspire children to love language, themselves and the world around them

In 2022, Clare founded the online resource Books That Help, to gather together picture books touching on a range of issues that help when the words are hard to find.

Clare's picture book publishers include Little Tiger Press, Quarto, Macmillan, Andersen Press and Nosy Crow.

Wee? It Wasn’t Me! illustrated by Nicola O'Byrne, won the picture book category of the Lollies (2023). The Tide, illustrated by Ashling Lindsay, won the KPMG Irish Children's Picture Book Award (2019).

Clare also writes early readers for Ladybird, Schofield and Sims, Collins Big Cat and Maverick Books.

When Clare isn't fulfilling her dream of writing for children, she is helping aspiring writers do the same. Clare was the WriteMentor Writer-in-Residence for picture books in 2021 and is a WriteMentor course tutor.
